In the few days that it has actually felt like summer on the east coast, there has been a noticeable shift in the way people dress. A friend (who’s outfit recipe you can read here) said it to me best. Sitting across from each other having a glass of wine in a very trendy neighborhood, filled with tons of people and great outfits, she looked around then turned to me.
“Everything is in right now," she said.
At least in the little corner of the earth we were occupying, she was right. Surrounding me were trends from the 80s, 90s, 2000s; there were sweatpants, full suits and nice dresses. In terms of what the attire was the vibes all over the place, and yet, everyone fit right in.
I understand Manhattan is different than so many other places around the world, but its hugeness still makes it a microcosm of fashion. So often I get frustrated with trends, fast fashion, and the sheer amount of shopping we all do to fit in. But looking around in that moment, I was reminded of the ways in which fashion is moving forward and making more room for everyone. People wearing what makes them feel good, or the most like themselves, is what fashion is about. So if that means a gown to a wine bar, then why not?
Expression and self-assuredness within dressing is what I would like to take into the rest of summer. Less impactful clothing that has meaning for the people who made it and to the person that’s wearing it. We have a lot going on right now, and fashion shouldn’t add harm – it should be a positive way to tell the story of who you are in the moment.
With that in mind, tell me what you’re wearing this summer!
