This Month’s Big Fashion News
This week, for the first time ever in the United States, a garment manufacturer is facing charges for wage theft violations. The U.S. has a long history of troubling labor violations in garment factories, but a new law in California, the Garment Worker Protection Act, has made it possible for these issues to be prosecuted.
According to a press release from California’s Labor Commission, “Lawrence Lee, co-owner of garment manufacturer business Parbe Inc., dba Fabiola, and Soon Ae Park, a garment contractor who had a history of wage theft, have been arraigned on felony charges of grand theft of wages and perjury by declaration.” The release notes that workers were being paid as little as $6 an hour.
How This Sustainable Fashion Podcaster Puts an Outfit Together
Emily Stochl is the host of Preloved Pod, and she is also the Advocacy Manager Remake. She has a knack for all things vintage, making her outfits all the more unique and special. Below, she shares her outfit recipe.
The inspiration.
I love to collect photo inspiration for outfits – just a folder full of screenshots! – and then riff on the aspects of the photo with items from my own closet. This outfit was inspired by a series of looks from the Sunflower show at Copenhagen Fashion Week, where the models wore long blazers with rosettes pinned to them. From that jumping-off point, I built my own look around those key features.
The process.
I love the Allison Bornstein ‘Three Words Method’ (who doesn’t?!), and I like to have an element of my look that touches on all three of my style words if I can. My words are vintage, Western, and bookish (a little preppy, but a little nerdy, too?) so I knew I had the bookish aspect covered with this vintage, almost school uniform blazer with nautical buttons.
Right now, we’re in that short time of year when shorts and boots make sense, so I decided to utilize longer shorts and vintage cowboy boots (picked up in Bozeman, Montana) to bring a Western aspect into the look.
Vintage is always easy for me – most of the pieces I own are vintage and have a retro-ness or some visible wear to them. For this look, I chose a 1980s Ford t-shirt, which brings a vintage feel to the look with its lettering and the way it’s worn in.
When getting dressed on this particular day, were there any feelings or moods that came up relating to your clothes? Maybe a particular vibe?
I’m very sentimental about clothes, and because I collect a lot of vintage pieces from dealer friends or from my travels, they all seem to have special memories associated with them. This rosette pin was given to me by my friend Michael of Toots Vintage when I was writing a story on A Current Affair in Brooklyn this spring. Whenever I look at it, I’m reminded of a happy memory – and so many of my clothes are that way!
The look.
Head to toe, I’m wearing my vintage 1980s Ford t-shirt, some thrifted 90s pleated longline shorts, a vintage school uniform blazer, and vintage cowboy boots from Bozeman. I’ve accessorized with a shell necklace that I found on Depop – these necklaces were my everything in the early 2000s, and I wish I still had my original ones – the rosette from Toots Vintage, and my LL Bean Boat Tote that I found at Goodwill for $5! I still need to get my tote embroidered with something sassy and ironic….
The feeling.
I felt very “me” in this outfit, but I was pleased with the creative twists I gave it. The base outfit of a vintage tee and blazer is something I reach for a lot, but it scratched a creative itch in my brain to play with fun accessories and make them look new.
