TOP STORY:
H&M signed a legally binding agreement to stop gender-based violence in its supply chain following the murder of Jeyarse Kathirave. Kathirave was 20 years old when she was murdered by her supervisor at Natchi Apparel, a manufacturer that makes clothing for H&M. Her family said she was being harassed prior to her death.
Julia Bakutis, industrial relations expert at H&M Global Social Sustainability team, told Supply Management, “H&M Group wants to do our utmost to contribute to systemic and positive change in the industry, and have therefore signed an agreement to work together with industry stakeholders to address, prevent and remedy gender-based violence and sexual harassment. We expect this agreement to contribute to a broader industry-wide initiative going forward. Every worker should feel safe working in our industry, whether they are employed by our suppliers or not.”
The agreement is a huge step forward. According to The Guardian, it will require gender-based violence training, and workers will now be able to anonymously report sexual harassment to an independent panel.
TOP READING:
Somewhere over the course of my unruly attachment to the internet, I lost my love of magazines. Or at least, it feels like I did. I never pick them up anymore. I am the problem! So this weekend I decided I’m going to the now Instagram famous Casa Magazines in Manhattan and pick up at least three different magazines. Then on Sunday, I’m going to sit with my coffee and not get up until I’ve read through them all. Will keep you posted.
TOP CLOTHING:
If you read this story about Julia Fox and her DIY wardrobe, then you may understand where I’m at with clothing this weekend. The sun is shining in the Northeast, and it's time for me to pull out all the pieces that I worked diligently to turn into the perfect length tops for high waisted pants. Namely, a denim vest that was once a too short dress.
TOP LISTENING:
I like my podcasts the same way I like my shows: bingeable. I just want to listen to it all at once, then research it for several hours afterwards. This week, I found “Wild Boys,” from Campside Media and listened to all 9 parts. It tells the story of two starving boys who were “found” in a small town in Canada, but it turns out they are not who they said they are. It’s a complex story, told thoughtfully by the host who grew up in the town.
TW: There is talk about eating disorders.
TOP DRINKING:
I never order Chardonnay for some unknown reason, but I will order a Chablis (it’s the same thing for those wondering). Something about Chablis makes me feel like a 1950s housewife in a good way. I have no business wearing an apron and pouring the buttery colored wine into a little bistro glass over and over again, but that is exactly what I plan to do this spring weekend. My favorite is the Gilbert Picq Chablis that you can find for around $25 a bottle.
