STORY TO KNOW:

Activists took to the streets of Time Square in New York City this week to protest Levi’s refusal to sign the International Accord. The accord is an agreement created to protect workers after the Rana Plaza factory collapsed, killing 1,134 people in 2013. “Levi's is dangerously behind the curve when it comes to making garment factories safe places to work,” Kalpona Akter, President of Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF) said in a press release. “Levi's has decided to pursue a voluntary approach to factory safety, which we know from many years of experience does not work. It is well past time for Levi’s to sign the Accord and ensure the safety of their workers.”
Levi’s has not yet responded to the protest.

NYT best-selling author Stephanie Danler released her first memoir “Stray” in 2020, but I think it’s worth revisiting this summer if you haven’t read it. Even as a New Yorker, I have a personal obsession with Laurel Canyon, so I was thrilled when much of her story was framed with a love of California, namely that area of Los Angeles. I was captivated by the structure, the writing, and honestly, wished for more when I was finished. The book is definitely worth a read if you haven’t gotten to it.

STYLE NOTE:

Last week, I wrote a story about how bad I am at packing for a trip. It has advice from some of my most well traveled friends to better my skills in the art of putting crap in luggage. The problem is that I didn’t take any of it. Some suggested packing cubes, which I did not buy. Others suggested easy layers which I cannot find, and one even suggested wearing all your bulky clothing on the plane, which I probably won’t do. It makes me wonder if the stress of packing is just part of the process for me and I'm destined to be a bad packer.

FOOD SPOTLIGHT:

Today, I’m dedicating this section to (what I believe is) the food of the summer: french fries. Before you tell me that fries are not a summer food, please hear me out. There is NOTHING. I mean, NOTHING, like sitting outside at a restaurant, sharing a bowl of fries with a friend and chatting as the sun slowly sets. For me, it’s best that these fries are made at a little cafe where I can order wine and espresso, however, if you’d rather enjoy in your backyard, below is my go-to perfect homemade french fry recipe.
