STORY TO KNOW:
Clothing is washing up on a beach outside of Accra, Ghana, one of the world’s biggest importers of secondhand clothing. According to a new report in The Independent, the fisherman in the area have to deal with massive piles of clothing on the shores in addition to the ever-growing lack of fish in the area. The photos taken by a local photographer are genuinely gutting. Most of the clothing comes from the United States and the UK, impacting the livelihoods of people around the world. Unsurprisingly, much of the clothes come from fast fashion brands like H&M, and many still have tags on it.

RECOMMENDED READING:

I’ll be honest. My summer reading list is not going well. Something about the heat makes me too antsy to focus on the book I have in my hands, which is annoying on the subway. Therefore, I have taken up a new podcast that I am quickly blasting through (even though it’s not fully released). It’s Wondery’s Fed Up, about the controversy surrounding the popular diet “The F Factor.” If you love niche internet gossip, this is definitely something to try.

STYLE NOTE:

Obviously, younger people love 2000s clothing, and I think it’s great. But why do I feel old when I wear clothing that I helped usher into pop culture by way of being a 2000s teen that thought it was cool? My style epiphany this week is that I am going to be OK with wearing things that I’ve always worn (like a long skirt or tie-dye shirt, for example) even if it kind of feels like I ripped it off of a hello fellow kids Gen Z mood board. Whatever that means for you, you do the same, OK?
FOOD SPOTLIGHT:

Last week, I did a live cooking lesson with James Beard nominated chef Nik Sharma. I know … I know! He taught me one of his quickest vegan recipes: Miso Spaghetti. The sauce only took about 25 minutes to make, including roasting the tomatoes. The most surprising part of the recipe was that I didn’t need salt at all, and the miso did all the flavoring without overpowering the sauce. I used chickpea pasta, but I think it might taste better with the real stuff.
