The Unapologetic DIY Wardrobe of Josh Safdie's Muse
Julia Fox cuts up clothing to make them her own, and you know what? Finally, someone is having fun.

If you don't know who Julia Fox is, I'm willing to bet you may have heard a truly painful amount of people on social media reenact her saying "UNCAH JAAAMS." Because the internet and I are exhausted by that whole trend, all you need to know is that when she was a guest on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she said she was Josh Safdie's muse when he wrote "Uncut Gems," a film she starred in with Adam Sandler. In early 2022, she reentered the zeitgeist when she was dating Kanye West. She wrote a story about the night they met for Interview Magazine, they appeared at fashion shows together, and the rapper even took her out for her birthday and bought all her friends Hermès Birkin bags.
And then it was over as quick as it began.
Fox, however, was not done with her moment in the spotlight - and why should she be, really? She continued making appearances with her now-signature chunky charcoal eye makeup. She keeps giving soundbites that are social media gold ("I did it myself … yeaaa" came from her too). And most interestingly, at least to me, is that she has become somewhat of a DIY fashion proponent.
Several times over the course of February and March, Fox was spotted by paparazzi wearing outfits that she, well, did herself. One was a white ribbed tank top that she cut into a top and skirt combination.

Another was a purse made out of a pair of jeans that went with another pair of jeans made into a bra top and low-rise pants.

And another was a sequin bra top made from the waistband of her skirt.

Whether or not you like the style of her outfits is not the point. It’s that DIY fashion — making clothing into something you love before it becomes something you toss — is objectively fun. Put aside all the trends and style rules being shoved down your throat and remember what it was like to discover clothing and make it your own. That’s when fashion had a spark for you, and the only reason you let it go is because some societal rule that said chopping up your t-shirts isn’t for grown-ups.
What’s more, we’re at a moment in celebrity fashion where people are either dressed head-to-toe by a brand, or styled by someone who makes every person look the same. Fox is at least giving us something. That white tank top dress was paired with leather gloves that went up to her shoulders and boots that went to her mid thigh? It was a little weird, sure. And I think we need a little more of that. I am craving some celebrity originality, and she is feeding us while also practicing some sustainable fashion by potentially (hopefully) extending the life of a piece of clothing by making it into something she’ll actually wear.
Maybe a denim bra isn’t going to be the move you make, but it’s something to keep in mind when you’re cleaning your closet out for summer — maybe those giveaway jeans would make a great pair of shorts?
